I remember discussing with Carsten Mellwig three and a half years ago his proposal to put on a short season of new, unknown British films. Could it work? Carsten was quietly confident, and of course here we are: welcome to the third edition of Britspotting, a snapshot of what's happening today at the low-budget end of the British film industry. There's a new crop of films: some raw, some polished, made on a variety of formats by a range of filmmakers. Some have won awards but all have one thing in common: without the energy and imagination of the Britspotting team, you'd probably never get to see them in cinema. That's what this is all about. Throughout Europe, there are young intelligent audiences for whom the glossy offerings of the commercial exhibitors will always be inadequate. Now we need someone here in London who'll do for German cinema what Britspotting is doing in Berlin.
